decay

The idea of loss of youth got me thinking about how it effects nature and the necessity of death to make way for new life.

Laura Su, designer for Prismera Design produced an interesting collection called Cast which is based upon the process of decay. The designs are beautiful and demonstrates to me that aging can by a symbol of beauty also. I felt this is a relevant point in my Precious Poetic project where I am exploring the effects of aging and loss of youth which often people feel is lost too early.

Poem Breakdown

After selecting the poem 'Song' by Christina Rossetti I decided to break down each line to gain more variety within my research. I believe this poem tells the story of a woman who feels she is aging and is struggling to come to terms with her loss of youth.

I find the reference to nature most intriguing and researched into the symbolic meanings behind the plants and flowers mentioned.

Precious Poetic

My first jewellery project called Precious Poetic. Our class was given a selection of verses from different poets and the task to chose one and produce a jewellery piece that reflected that poem. The final piece had to be a brooch that could also be worn as a pendant.

My chosen poem was Song by Christina Rossetti and the selected lines:

Oh roses for the flush of youth,
And laurel for the perfect prime;
But pluck an ivy branch for me
Grown old before my time.

Oh violets for the grave of youth,
And bay for those dead in their prime;
Give me the withered leaves I chose
Before in the old time.
